CAN/CSA Q830-96 Model Code for the Protection of Personal information (the Privacy Code) is a nationally-recognized standard developed by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The standard is unique in the world as it is the result of a collaboration of private sector organizations, unions, consumer advocates, and government bodies who created a national privacy standard for the protection of personal information.
The Privacy Code balances the privacy rights of individuals with the legitimate information requirements of private and public sector organizations operating in the information age. The Privacy Code is based on 10 principles and is derived in part from the OECD (organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) privacy recommendations.
As a voluntary standard, its adoption by organizations sends a powerful message to individuals that the organizations with which they deal, have put politics and practices in place that control the amount, use, and disclosure of personal information.
In addition to this public confidence, the standard also translates into other benefits for the organization, which adopts the Privacy Code. Information gathering is more focused, reducing the expense of collecting and retaining extraneous information. In addition, decisions upon which information is based has greater reliability since confidence in its accuracy is increased. Costs may be further reduced because organizations set retention times for information and do not indiscriminately store information taking up valuable computer memory or floor space.
Organizations who adopt the Privacy Code and who seek to deal with countries where privacy legislation exists will find it easier to continue to do business and possibly develop new relationships.
QMI has developed a registration program to Q830 tailored to meet the needs of diverse organizations.
CAN/CSA Q830-96, Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information, and PLUS 8300, Making the Privacy Code Work for You, are both available for purchase through QMI. A complete catalogue is available.
